Latest Trekking Rules For Nepal: Overview

As per the Nepal Tourism Board, the new rules state that all the trekkers trekking in Nepal must obtain the TIMS Card. Solo trekking is banned in Nepal so you must hire a licensed trekking Guide with you.

This new trekking rule was effective from the date March 31, 2023. Also, the price of the TIMS card was revised. The new price for the TIMS card is NPR. 1000 for the SAARC nationals and for foreigners they need to pay NPR. 2000.

Need to obtain the TIMS Card

Before April 1st, 2023, it was not compulsory to obtain a TIMS Card in all trekking areas, but after the new regulations came into effect, it became mandatory to obtain one. It is for the safety and security of the trekkers. If anything happens during the trek, with the details that are submitted in the TIMS Card the government of Nepal can provide immediate emergency assistance.

Also to obtain the TIMS Card you can get it on your own or you can get it through the government-registered trekking agencies. They will arrange the TIMS permit on the trekkers’ behalf. But trekkers need to submit all the required documents, fill out the form, and pay the fees.

Hire the Government- licensed trekking Guide

Trekking solo is banned in Nepal, therefore while trekking in the national park, conservation areas, and restricted or protected areas of Nepal it is mandatory to hire the government-licensed Gude with you. Hiring a guide has many advantages, and this improved rule is aimed at enhancing the safety of trekkers.

Hiring the Guide will not only make sure that the trekkers will be in safe hands but it will also provide employment opportunities in the local areas. It will help in the Nepal Tourism Sector and also help in promoting culture and preserving the environment.

If the trekkers are found trekking without the TIMS Card and Guide they need to pay the hefty fine of 10,000 rupees (US$77). Also in some cases, legal action will be taken including Jail.
