Gokyo Lake Trek – 13 Days Overview

The Gokyo Lake trek is one of the great alternatives to escape the city’s pollution and enjoy the scenery of the Everest region. For many tourists, this trek is adventurous, tough, and unrealistic, too. So, in the peak season, many trekkers are seen on the trail.

Gokyo Lake lies in the Everest region, promising superb scenarios of the Himalayas. You can see 4 peaks above 8000m, i.e. Everest (the highest mountain in the world), Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu.

The trail is not that hard, but the trails can be challenging at times. Heights may be the scary part for those who have Acrophobia. One of the scary parts is the high-hanging bridge along the trek.

The biggest challenge of this trek is its altitude. You will reach altitudes around 4000m with Gokyo Village at 5357m high. But with all these challenges and hard trails, you can also enjoy the beautiful landscapes of the Khumbu region.

Overall, you will be able to enjoy the fascinating beauty of the serene lakes with mountain backdrops. The trek to Gokyo Lake can be enjoyed at any season, but the best time will be in the spring and autumn. However, packing the right gear and clothing is a must, making the journey hassle-free.

Useful Information

When to Visit Gokyo Lake Trek

Autumn is a great time to go trekking in the Everest region. This is because you can see the enormous mountains with amazing clarity during this time of year. On the other hand, because it’s the busiest time of year, the trail is overcrowded.

For the Gokyo Lake Trek, spring is the best season after autumn. This is a season of rebirth. The snow usually melts, the trees start to bloom, the skies are usually clear, and so on during this time of year.

Even if it’s not the best journey to Gokyo Lake in the winter, there are still plenty of opportunities to view the scenery. However, because of the cold temperature during the season, trekkers face challenges. In the highest altitudes, the overnight low can be as low as -20 degrees Celsius.

The monsoon season in Nepal coincides with the summer. As a result, one needs to be ready for frequent rainfall. The earth gets muddy and dangerous after rain. Landslides and flooding are the results of this. This makes it difficult for hikers.

Gokyo Lake Trek Difficulty

For most trekkers with a fair level of fitness and some prior trekking experience, the Gokyo Lake Trek offers a moderate level of challenge. It is critical to plan ahead and be conscious of any potential obstacles. Up to 5000 meters above sea level will be reached throughout the trek’s ascent.

Acclimatization is possible due to the slow ascent, but it’s important to recognize the signs of altitude sickness and take the appropriate safety measures. To avoid any health hazards, getting enough rest and drinking plenty of water is crucial. The trail consists of clearly marked trails with a few rough and steep sections.

With the proper equipment and tactics, walking on moraine and glacier debris can be difficult but manageable throughout some trek sections. Particularly during the winter and monsoon seasons, when it may snow or rain, the weather can change. The right attire should be packed, and you should be ready for any weather changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why go for the Gokyo Lakes Trek?
Everest Gokyo Lakes trek is one of the best treks in the Khumbu region and provides more solitude compared to other popular treks such as the Everest base Camp trek. You will be fascinated by the view of lakes enclosed by the snowy Himalayan ranges. From the top of Gokyo Ri, you can see four peaks above 8000 meters: Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and others including Cho Oyu.
Is the Gokyo Lake Trek difficult?
There is elevation gain and the paths and there is only one weakness: the height. Namche Bazaar and points beyond are above 4000 meters, and Gokyo Village is at an altitude of 4750 meters. Climb not more than 300 meters a day to allow the body to adjust to the high altitudes.
What time should I go for the Gokyo Lakes Trek?
The ideal climatic conditions for visiting are spring (from March to May), and autumn (from September to November). This is because during these times the weather conditions are good and the beauty of the environment is outstanding.
What gear should I carry with me?
You can carry comfortable hiking shoes, warm and waterproof wear, sleeping bags, and a daypack. Do not leave behind your shades, your sunblock, and your water bottle to refill whenever you feel thirsty. For more details, you can visit our 'Packing List for Gokyo Lake Trek' section.
Will I suffer from altitude sickness?
When you are trekking in more than 5000 meters, there are chances of you getting altitude sickness. While there are possibilities of sickness you can always take precautions and be safe. Make sure you hydrate yourself and always carry a water bottle.
How long does the trek take?
The trek usually takes around 12 to 15 days, depending upon the pace and also the package you have chosen.

Best local trekking company in Nepal!! An increadible journey!..and the Best local company in Nepal. I did the EBC + Chola Pass + Gokyo Lakes. Pemba (owner) customised my trip and took care of everything! I had a great guide Prayash who really helped me through the trek and gave me lots of knowlege and stories of the Everest region. I have been to mountains of Europe/USA/ NZ but the raw beaty of the Himalayas is something special. The physical challenge of altitude, the tea houses, high bridge crossings, Sherpa culture and all the fellow trekkers and climbers make this trip so unique. It has been a highlight of my life and i was fortunate to go with a local company who are genuinely passionate about sharing the Himalayas with you. Also at end of trek they organised sightseeing tours. I was also able to contribute to the companies charity in a small way some by donating some stationary and sports equipment to a mountain school. If you are going to Nepal i would highly recommend Pemba and his team of guides. I will be back! Namastae

Amazing trip - great local company. Everything was organised really well and had a great guide. All transport was arranged and Pemba (owner) is fantastic and genuinely wants you to have the trip of a lifetime. Did EBC and 3 High Passes and it was amazing!
