The Nar and the Phu are two different valleys that you will reach during this Nar Phu Valley trek. Hiking through the route of world famous Annapurna Circuit trek, this trek is the perfect combo for the trekking enthusiast like you.
Nar Phu Valley trek is graded as a strenuous trek as it required nearly two weeks to complete this remote trek and the most challenging part of this trek is to cross Thorong La Pass (5,4525m / 17,764ft). So before you embark on this beautiful journey to the Nar Phu Valley make sure to prepare in advance and maintain a good level of physical fitness.
Located in the remote part of the Annapurna Region this trek is listed as a restricted trekking area. Therefore you need to book through the register trekking agency and must hire a license Guide with you. Also along with the Guide you must be in a group of a minimum of two people. Special type of permit is also required for this trek which will be arranged only by your local trekking agency.
Your 14-day Nar Phu Valley Trek begins by riding on a Tourist bus for about 5 hours from Kathmandu( Gongabu bus station) to Besisahar. Then riding for further 2-3 hours you will reach Jagat to spend the night in the Guest house.
You will have option to use private jeep if you want to have comfortable than local bus but it will cost you little extra for that. You need to tell us in advance before booking Nar Phu Valley so that we will arrange for you in advance. You will also option to reach by taking Kathamndu to Pokhara flight and then taking a private vehicle to reach the starting point of the Nar Phu Valley Trek.
Your official trekking journey starts from Dharapani. Trekking for several days and passing through several villages Meta, Nar Valley, Yak Kharka, Thorang Phedi and challenging mountain pass Thorong La Pass (5,4525m / 17,764ft) you will reach Muktinath Temple while returing from the trek.
Muktinath Temple is also one of the major highlights of Nar Phu Valley trek. Then you will trek toward the Jomsom, spend one day in this windy valley. Early the next morning, you’ll take a private vehicle to reach Pokhara, completing your Nar Phu Valley trekking adventure.
Then from Pokhara you will either take flight or ride a tourist bus/ private vehicle to reach Kathmandu. If there is no flight you will spend your night in the hotel in Pokhara and next morning you take a tourist bus for Kathmandu.

On your very first day of Nar Phu Valley trek you will take a Tourist bus from Kathmandu to Besishahar. After riding for around 5 hours you will reach Besisahar which is the main gateway of Annapurna Circuit Trek. Then after having lunch in Besisahar you will ride again for 2-3 hours to reach Jagat and spend the night in the tea house.

Leaving Jagat you will start your first trek for the Nar Phu Valley trek with your experience Guide and porter. Trekking distance from Jagat to Dharapani is approximately 15 km and to reach Dharapni from Jagat it will take 7-8 hours.
Trekking through the route of a beautiful village, terrace field and lush green forest uphill you will reach Dharapani which is situated at the altitude of 1860m. The you will spend the night in the local tea house in Dharapani.

Today, having a hearty breakfast in the tea house of Koto, we will prepare to reach Meta early in the morning.
Today’s journey takes you through the restricted area so make sure to carry the Nar Phu Valley trek permit. You need to show a permit in the checkpost and they will register it.
Hiking through the beautiful Rhododendron forest and pine forest we will reach Dharamsala. Then after taking our well deserved lunch in this palace after a long hour of trekking we take a rest for a while.
Then resuming our journey and walking for a few hours we will reach Meta to spend the night in the local tea house. From the Meta you can get the exclusive view of Lamjung Himal and Annapurna II.

Leaving Meta today we will start walking on the bank of Phu River and cross suspension bridges several times. Then walking for around 4 hours you will reach Kyang viallage. In this place you can see the Tibetan refugees camp.
Also during the trek you can see the amazing view of Mt. Amostsang Himal, Kangaroo Mountain and Pokharkan. Then after you reach Phu Gaon you will have a delicious dinner and spend the night in a local tea house.

After having a delicious breakfast in the early morning we will start to hike downhill through rocky trails, many suspension bridges and streams for around 4 hours to reach Mahendra Pul.
After crossing the high suspension bridge which is 80m long over the Gorge of Lapche River we will take lunch in the tea house.
Then walking for 2 hours more will reach Ner Village. In the Nar village you can find many homes, schools, buddhist monasteries and prayer flags.
Also Pisang Peak and other small peaks can be seen through this village which is magnificent to watch.

Day 07: Acclimatization Day at Nar
Nar is the beautiful village for acclimatisation for trekkers before moving further for Nar Phu Valley trek. In Nar village there are plenty of things to do and see things.
Take rest well and don’t forget to monitor your health. Most importantly don’t consume alcohol and do heavy exercise which can trigger altitude sickness.
Day 08: Trek from Nar to Ngawal via Kang La Pass

Today will be a challenging day as you will be crossing the Kang la Pass situated at the altitude of 5,322m.
Make sure to follow your trekking Guide instructions for your safety and carry a water bottle and drink plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated all the time.
Leaving the Nar after having breakfast you will hike through the moraines of Temdenzon River. You can also see yak harding on the trekking routes.
When you reach the Kang La Pass you will be rewarded with a panoramic view of Marshyangdi Valley, Annapurna II, Gangapurna and Tilicho Peak.
Then taking a decent step from the pass and walking for two to three hours you will reach Nagwal. Then you will spend the night in the local tea house of Ngawal.

After yesterday’s challenging trek, today’s hike will be relatively short and easy. From Ngawal walking for 4-5 hours and covering around 11 km in distance you will reach Manang.
During the hike on the trekking route you will find plenty of trekkers that are heading for the Annapurna Circuit trek and locals busy in doing daily work.
Also during your trek you will have some panoramic far views of Annapurna II, Annapurna III, Gangapurna, Pisang Peak, Tilicho.
You will spend the night in the local tea house in Manang. You can find numerous lodges, teahouses and a beautiful monastery in this village. You can explore it after you reach Manang.

The total distance from Manang to Yak Kharka is around 10 km and it will take 3-4 hours to reach Yak Kharka from Manang.
Leaving Manang walking you will cross the stream and walk towards Tanki village and head to Jarsang Valley.
Then you will take an ascending step to reach Gunsan village which is a small settlement.
Then passing through pine and oak forests crossing some streams you’ll reach Yak Kharka.
This place is named Yak Kharka because it was once pasture land for Yaks. You will spend the night in the local tea house in Yak Kharka.

Then reaching upon the Thorong Phedi you will check in the tea house to spend the night.

Today’s journey is full of challenges and adventure. Wake up early in the morning and prepare to hike through Nar Phu Valley, reaching the highest point at Thorong La Pass, which stands at an altitude of 5,425 meters.
You need to be physically and mentally strong to pass these challenging mountain passes.From this vantage point, situated between Yakwakang and Thorung Peak, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Annapurna mountain ranges.
Starting from east of the Manang hiking for around 1000 m upwards you will reach this pass and take beautiful pictures and enjoy for a while you will head towards Manang District.

After spending a wonderful night in the peaceful and religious place, today you will hike toward Jomsom. First you will walk through the bank of the famous Kali Gandaki River.
The wind here is often strong so use precaution while walking. Passing through several popular places like Jharkot, Khingar and Kagbeni you will reach Ekle Bhatti and take a rest for a while and have lunch.
After you reach Jomsom you will spend the night in the guest house. Jomsom which is also known as Windy Valley is also a popular tourist spot and famous for its dry climate. Spending the night in this place is equally worthwhile.

Trip Information About Nar Phu Valley Trek
Food on Nar Phu Valley Trek
Nar Phu Valley trek is an isolated trekking destination therefore trekkers can expect only basic types of food. In this trek you will enjoy Nepali dishes like Dal Bhat Tarkai, Momos, Tibetan bread, yak steak Thuppa, noodles and some few international dishes like pizza, burger and sandwich.
The higher altitude you will reach the more limited food options will be available in the tea house. Remember beef is prohibited in Nepal so you will not have any beef items here. Instead of beef you can try Yak Steak.
Three meals will be arranged by trekking agencies and if you have any diet restriction then you need to tell us in advance. Breakfast will be served early in the morning and lunch will be provided during the day hike.
For dinner it will be served in the tea house that you will spend the night. Food will not be served inside the room. The tea house will have open dining where you will eat your food.
The cost of the meal will cost you around 3-7$ per person and for three time meals it will cost you around 30$. Beverage will not be included in the package therefore if you want to drink you need to have it on your own.

During the Nar Phu Valley trek everyday after hiking you will spend the night in the tea house. Mountain region Guest houses are called tea houses in Nepal. Tea house provides the facilities of lodging, food and other facilities like hot shower, wifi and electricity.
It is like home away from home but here you need to learn to live with very few facilities. Tea house is situated in the stunning location on the trail path and you can enjoy the nice view of nature while spending the night.
The rooms inside the tea house are cozy and inside one single room you will find a twin bed with a warm blanket, pillow, bed sheet and mattress. At the lower altitude you may find the single room with an attached bathroom but at the high altitude all the rooms are the same.
Trekkers often need to share the toilets among the travellers. You will find the squat types of toilets and you need to carry things like toilet paper, hand wash etc on your own.
Best Time for Nar Phu Valley Trek
Trekking to Nar Phu Valley is challenging and trekkers need to trek on during the best time for the comfort, great views, clear sky, perfect trekking weather conditions. You can find these things during the months of Feb, Mar, Apri, May, June, Sep, Oct, Nov & Dec.
We highly recommend you not to trek during the month of winter and the monsoon season due to challenging weather conditions. Passing the mountain pass Thorong La Pass (5416 m) and Khangla Pass (5320 m) becomes highly difficult if the weather is not suitable.
Trekking in Nar Phu Valley can be very tough during the freezing cold winter and heavy rain of the monsoon season. It’s best to choose the right time to trek for a safer and more enjoyable experience.
Physical Fitness Required For The Nar Phu Valley Trek
Nar Phu Valley trek is graded as a challenging trek therefore trekkers need to have strong physical fitness before embarking on this beautiful trek.
Trekkers need to walk on average 5-6 hours daily and sometimes 7-8 hours. Along with the physical fitness it is necessary to have the mental fitness to encourage and self motivate when difficult times come.
For the beginners trekkers we suggest you trek other high altitude trek before joining this trek. This trek is for the moderate-level trekkers. If you are beginners and want to do this trek then you need to prepare in advance for at least 3-5 months earlier.
You can trek daily by participating in exercises like running, cycling, gym, yoga, summing etc.Make sure to increase your strength in your legs and lower back, as you’ll be walking for long durations and need a strong core.
Wifi/Electricity And Communication During Nar Phu Valley Trek
Tea houses provide you with wifi facilities at the extra cost. You need to pay around 2-3 USD to connect the wifi and you may not find a strong connection everywhere due to the remote location.
If you want to charge your electronic device then you can find the charging space in the tea house. For the charging also you need to pay an extra cost.
Normally a tea house will charge you around USD 3-5 per hour. If you want to save the charging cost then you can use your power bank and solar charger.
For communication during the Nar Phu Valley Trek it’s better to carry the local sim(Ncell or NTC). In Annapurna Region Ncell has a great connection so we suggest you to take Ncell sim to use mobile internet. You can buy the sim for around $1.
Travel Insurance Requirement For Nar Phu Valley Trek
Nar Phu Valley lies in the remote part of the Annapurna Region and it takes you to extreme high altitude during this trip. When trekking in the remote area it will be very challenging to provide treatment so an emergency helicopter evacuation is a must.
In a short period of time you will transfer to the city area of Nepal which has higher medical facilities. Your trekking insurance must cover the emergency helicopter evacuation including flight cancellation, loss and theft of personal belongings, medical treatment, and altitude risks.

Nar Phu Valley is listed as a restricted trekking region for foreigners. Therefore, trekkers can only trek after obtaining special permits. You can only get the permits through a local registered trekking agency like Eco Nepal Trekkers.

To trek inside the restricted area of Nar Phu Valley it is mandatory to obtain the Nar Phu Valley Restricted Area (NRA) Permits which will cost you around USD100 per week per person. Altitude Sickness and Acclimatization on Nar Phu Valley Trek
Altitude sickness is one of the major concerns for the high altitude trek in the mountain region of Nepal like Nar Phu Valley Trek. On the journey to the Nar Phu Valley you will gain altitude in everyday hike and it takes you to the maximum altitude of Thorong La Pass (5416 m).
While walking such high altitude the symptoms of altitude sickness can arise in some trekkers. The symptoms of altitude sickness( AMS) are headache, fatigue, weakness, dizziness, difficulty sleeping, vomiting.
It can be cured easily when we descend to the lower altitude. If any of these symptoms occurs during the trek you need to inform your trekking Guide Immediately.

Hot Shower Facilities During Nar Phu Valley Trek
Trekkers can get the hot shower facilities while staying at the tea house during the Nar Phu Valley Trek. You need to take a shower with the help of a bucket which is filled with hot water.
The cost of the hot shower may not be available in all the tea houses, especially at the high altitude areas. The cost of the hot shower ranges from $3-5$ per person.
