In a meeting of the District Level Wildlife Crime Control Unit, Rasuwa, on 23 Jan 2025, it was found that some tourists visiting the Langtang National Park area were traveling without a trekking guide. The national park Area, with its remote geographical conditions and extremely cold climate, has led to the loss of foreign tourists, accidents, and even deaths, the data showed. Also, since the absence of a trekking guide accompanying the tourists makes it difficult to provide timely treatment and rescue to the tourists, the rule has been implemented to ensure the safety of domestic and foreign tourists.

What Do the New Rules Mean for Trekkers?

From Feb 5, 2025, all trekkers visiting the Langtang Valley must abide by the following regulations:

  • Mandatory Trekking Guide Requirement: Solo trekking has banded (without a guide). Trekkers must hire a government-licensed holder Trekking guide or Nature Guide to do trek in the Langtang valley.
  • TIMS Card and Permits: Besides the Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS) card, trekkers must obtain the necessary permits for the Langtang National Park. Trekking Agency or Your Guide will assist with the formalities.
  • Insurance Requirements: Travel insurance that covers emergency evacuation and medical expenses is highly recommended.
