Kanchenjunga Trek – 22 Days Brief Insight

“May your dreams be larger than mountains and may you have the courage to scale their summits” – Unknown

Kanchenjunga Trek is one of the famous off-the-beaten-path treks located in the remote eastern part of Taplejung District, Nepal. This trek is also called the Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek as it takes you both to the base camp of Mount Kanchenjunga.

Kanchenjunga Trek is one of the longest and most challenging treks in Nepal. The Kanchenjunga trek route takes you to the base camp of the world’s third-highest mountain in the world, Mt. Kanchenjunga (8,586m).

It is rated as a challenging trek based on the difficulty rating. The Kanchenjunga Trail’s extreme isolation, difficulty, and remoteness are the primary causes of its difficulty. As a result, only a small number of hikers have traveled to this area.

If you want to customize the Kanchenjunga trek itinerary to only Kanchenjunga North base camp or Kanchenjunga South base camp, it is also possible with Eco Nepal Trekkers.

Remember, you cannot do a solo Kanchenjunga trek because the government of Nepal put this trek on the restricted trekking region list. You will only be able to go to in the Kanchenjunga Region with a special restricted permit.

Compared to the famous Annapurna Circuit trek and the Manaslu Circuit trek, the Kanchenjunga trek is more difficult due to its remoteness.

This trek demands a high level of physical fitness and a strong mentality. This trek can be achievable only with a good amount of preparation, sticking to a perfect plan, strong determination, and for those who want to stay out of their comfort zone and want to challenge themselves in beautiful nature.

Is the Kanchenjunga Trek Suitable for you?

On this 22-day Kanchenjunga trip, your journey starts from Bhadrapur. Reaching Bhadrapur will take approximately 1 hour on the flight from Kathmandu International Airport(TIA).

Kanchenjunga Trek is located in the remote part of the eastern region, and during the journey, you will stay in a tea house after every day hike. Someday, you will be walking for around 5-6 hours, and someday, you will have a long day of hiking for around 8 hours.

The facilities inside the tea house are limited, and the higher you go, the more basic the facilities become. Also, some trekkers love to go camping at base camp during the Kanchenjunga Trip.

This trek demands an excellent level of physical fitness but also good mental power to boost and encourage yourself for the summit. You need to learn to deal with the challenges that may arise during the journey, like unexpected weather conditions, remote conditions, high altitude, long duration of trek, extreme cold at high altitude, and so on.

If you think you can overcome the challenge by making the right preparations and you have good physical fitness, then you can join this beautiful trip.

Even though you might feel scared after you hear that it is a strenuous and challenging, remember that thousands of trekking enthusiasts have completed this trek. In fact, as per static, the success rate of the Kanchenjunga trek is 98% when done with enough preparation and in the best time( spring and autumn).

Useful Information For Kanchenjunga Trek

Best Time For Kanchenjunga Trek

The best time to embark on the Kanchenjunga is in April, May, and early June, as well as during October, November, and early December. This time is considered the best time for going to Kanchenjunga due to favorable trekking conditions due to stable weather, moderate temperature, less rainfall, clear skies, warm days, and cooler nights.

Summer and winter seasons are considered the off-season for going to the Kanchenjunga Circuit due to harsh weather conditions. The continuous heavy rainfall in the monsoon makes the river scary and it becomes a challenge to cross this river. Also, the chances of flooding remain high in monsoon season.

Similarly, in the winter the temperature drops below freezing during the daytime and in the night time it can reach below -20 degrees Celsius. The cold freezing temperature and heavy snowfall at high altitudes created difficulties and added challenges to the trek.

Note: Always choose the best season to go to the Kanchenjunga as you know this trek is challenging in itself. Trekking in the best time will help to minimize the risk and it is safe to trek in the best time. Eco Nepal trekkers highly suggest you not to trek during the month of the winter and the monsoon season.

Altitude Sickness on Kanchenjunga Trek

Altitude sickness is one of the challenging factors for those who want to embark on the Kanchenjunga Trek. Altitude sickness can happen to anyone while trekking at high altitude. It is due to the presence of low amounts of oxygen in air and our body finds it difficult to adjust according to the altitude.

Normally altitude sickness can happen when we reach an altitude above 3000m. The more you go higher the chances of getting altitude sickness also increase. In this Kanchenjunga also you will reach the incredible altitude of 5143m.|16873ft. So for Kanchenjunga Trek also there is a high chance of getting altitude sickness.

Altitude sickness commonly known as Acute Mountain Sickness( AMS) is curable which is also known as the initial stage of altitude sickness. When these symptoms occur and are not treated in time then it can lead to an advanced stage of altitude sickness i.e. HAPE and HACE.

So learn the early symptoms of altitude sickness and follow the preventive measures. Taking Diamox is also a great way to reduce the chance of altitude sickness. Most importantly if you feel difficulty during the journey or discomfort please tell immediately to your Guide.
